david thai

Seekers® Glass Gallery presents the work of David Thai (Choi Kei Hoi) who creates a series of original designs in handblown glass vases and sculpture.

As David describes his work: "Glass is the medium that best reflects my innermost feelings. When approaching glass in its fluid state, I am deeply moved by the metamorphosis from a molten state to the solidified shape of my design. As the Italian glass artist Livio Seguso said, glass is a material that seems to be borne out of the sea to live in the air shaped by fire: it fascinates and ignites the imagination. I am inspired by the intricate cane work of Italian master glass blowers and designers. Through the exploration of these techniques, I attempt a balance of craftsmanship and concept."

David uses silver foil he imports from Japan to decorate his "Signature Series." His "Atlas Series" also uses silver leaf decoration to represent the surface of imaginary planets. The shape of the vessel is fashioned after one of the four parts of the star maps of the Constellations.

David was born in China and emigrated from Viet Nam in 1985. He received a business degree at Ryerson University and went on to graduate from the Crafts and Design Glass Program at Sheridan College in 2002. He worked as a studio assistant to Andrew Kuntz before moving on to his own studio. He has also taught at Sheridan College and at Harbourfront Center Glass Studio. David is currently teaching and creating glass art at the Living Art Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

David’s work has won numerous awards including Award of Excellence at Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition; Outstanding Achievement Award and Color Fusion Award at Sheridan College; Gaffers Club and Collaboration & Team Work Awards also at Sheridan College as well as numerous other honors. His work has been shown at major museums and shows in both Canada and the United States.
