Glass Gallery presents handblown glass lamps by Jared Davis, a talented
emerging artist whose designs are inspired by the natural grandeur surrounding
his rural Colorado home.
Jared’s series of Fission Lamps are
distinctive, unique works of illuminated art. He creates each lamp -- base and
matching shade -- by layering numerous, mostly earthen colors of molten glass,
then uses a special crackle process for added texture.
He freely blows each piece, without the use
of molds, so that the shape, form and size of each lamp he creates is one of a
kind. Variations within this series include his Bubble Lamps.
“My current body of work is representative
of many aspects of the desert southwest that I find inspiring: colors, patterns
and formations,” Jared explains.
“When working with blown glass, I am
working with a molten material, which follows a viscous path according to where
it is hottest and coolest. By using my Fission technique, that is layering
numerous colors and using a special crackle process, I am able to portray a
moment in time, that moment is a fusion of hot, cold, energy, passion and a
blend of color which I hope will capture a little of the beauty of the
experience we call life.”
Each of Jared’s lamps is signed and is a
functional work of art, with two 40-watt bulbs up top and a 7-watt bulb, with a
separate switch, in the base.
Jared, who was born in New York City and
raised in Aspen, Colorado, began working with glass in 1992. He studied Venetian
style glass blowing and glass sculpting at the renowned Pratt Fine Arts School
in Seattle.
In 1995 he was introduced to Swedish glass
masters Jan-Erik Ritzman and Sven Ake Carlsson, who invited Jared to study with
them in Transjo, Sweden for two years. Following this very important
apprenticeship, Jared returned to Colorado and became an active glassblower and
designer for K Dahl Glass Studios. In 2001 he established his own studio, Davis
Glass.
Among the venues where he has exhibited his
work are: the Wyly Community Art Center, Aspen, CO; the Denver International
Airport; the Smalands Museum, Vaxjo, Sweden; The Art Center, Grand Junction, CO;
and Nordiska Kristall, in Stockholm, Sweden.
Jared
Davis’ work is shown in numerous fine galleries, museums, juried exhibitions
and other notable venues throughout the United States.
